  17. insisted Symons in his landmark, aesthetically rigorous dissection
  18. of the genre, Bloody Murders. The book savaged some of America's
  19. most popular writers ("Line by line and page by page ((James
  20. Ellroy and Andrew Vachss)) are extremely bad writers")--but
  21. the British-born son of Russian-Jewish parents practiced his
  22. preachments: Symons' 26 crime novels are models of psychological
  23. complexity and social observation.
