- <p> DIED. JULIAN SYMONS, 82, acerbic writer and critic; in London.
- "Crime stories are not simply entertainment, but also literature,"
- insisted Symons in his landmark, aesthetically rigorous dissection
- of the genre, Bloody Murders. The book savaged some of America's
- most popular writers ("Line by line and page by page ((James
- Ellroy and Andrew Vachss)) are extremely bad writers")--but
- the British-born son of Russian-Jewish parents practiced his
- preachments: Symons' 26 crime novels are models of psychological
- complexity and social observation.
